SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Eric & Becca Warren

Our other two October Spotlight Athletes are an amazing couple, Eric and Becca Warren! Thomas and I were actually neighbors with Eric and Becca before they joined CrossFit Rolesville. We loved them as neighbors just as much as we loved them as members! Once they started attending classes, they instantly became a big part of our CFR community. They both have made incredible improvements, always supportive of their fellow athletes, and constantly come to class with a great attitude. It’s bittersweet, but Eric has recently taken a High School Pastor position at a church in Tennessee. We wish this amazingly awesome all the best in their future endeavors! And these two will forever be apart of our CFR family!

Age:

ERIC: 28

BECCA: 27

Occupation:

ERIC: High School Pastor, The Glade Church

BECCA: Development Officer (aka Professional Schmoozer)

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

ERIC: Getting Becca to try out Crossfit. She was a bit hesitant at first, now I’ve turned her into a full blown Crossfitter 😉

BECCA: Ah! I think nailing my first pull-up during the Open. It was totally unexpected and I love how you can surprise yourself at CFR. I honestly never thought I would be able to do one of those. I have seen so many others surprise themselves and it just gets me so tickled and happy!

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

ERIC: Bec and I found CFR by searching out a few gyms in the area, visiting them, and deciding which one we wanted to be a part of. After our visits it became exceedingly obvious that CFR was a cut above the rest and that is where we desired to spend our time.  Turns out that that was such a wonderful decision because it genuinely is the highlight of our day to come to the gym, enjoy all of our incredible friends, and get a great workout.

I train to stay in shape physically, yes, but more so because I firmly believe that we do ourselves a great disservice if we spend all day working, taxing our minds, and do nothing to discipline our bodies as well. Especially as I pursue ministry and so much weighs on my heart and my mind throughout the day, I find that I am so much sharper if I am able to go and workout real hard and exercise my body, so that my mind can operate more clearly.

BECCA: Eric made me do it. lol. I have been pursuing some sort of fitness for most of my life, and was working out on my own but Eric really wanted to find a CrossFit gym and I was so nervous as it had been some time since I had done CrossFit. But I am so glad he peer-pressured me.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

ERIC: There are so many really great memories that Bec and I have gained so far, but up there for me is definitely week 1 of the Open. Coming in with an incredibly fun atmosphere, seeing others tackling the workout and succeeding, and the amazing food afterwards, its just such a blast being around everyone on those nights.

BECCA: There are just so many!! I think it would have to be either seeing everyone rally around Mark McArn doing bear crawls at the Open (such a cool moment), talking in a British accent with Brantley and just laughing in general with the 5:30am crew, or watching the hottie Eric try to do race handstand walks against Brittany and Marin’s daughters! Oh sheesh there are so many. You guys all rock.

What is your daily motivation to workout?

ERIC: I had a professor in seminary who once stressed to me the importance of taking care of yourself physically as it pertains to pastors. I hope and aspire to a long and fruitful career in ministry, and like all of us I desire to do good work. This requires great discipline and planning. Doing Crossfit allows me to pursue health and wellness so that I can be free to pursue ministry without having to worry about declining health.

Other than that, I just think its a lot of fun to test your limits and see genuine improvement from benchmark to benchmark.

BECCA: Seeing all of y’all! I am legitimately sad when I have to miss because of not getting to spend that time with my favorite people. And… I do have the added motivation of knowing that my will power when it comes to “play” food on the weekends is… well… lacking. And sometimes it’s weekdays. Anyone wanna go get a donut?

Favorite and least favorite movements?

ERIC: Favorite: Snatch

Least Favorite: Thruster, hands down.

BECCA: My favorite is probably rowing or “Wednesday” workouts in general! Least favorite is Back Squat. Woof.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

ERIC: Do not be intimidated. I walked into my first Crossfit gym in 2013 and I felt completely out of my depth to start. It was humbling on many accounts, but for the first time in my life I saw myself improving both with my body and my performance. And the best part about it has always been the other members rallying around me in support. My experience with Crossfit vs. most any other gym experience could not be more different. You’re not alone in the gym trying to find your own way, sometimes succeeding, many times not. Coaches and fellow members have a vested interest in your improvement and happiness. That is the truth through and through at CFR and I think that is really quite special.

BECCA: That it’s not as scary as it seems and that it can actually be a lot of fun!

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

ERIC: Be Humble – Kendrick Lemar… or anything Taylor Swift… instant PR

BECCA: Anything by my boy LUDA (S/O to Ash, his other biggest fan!). Also anything from the early 2000, songs that I stop lifting and start dancing to.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

ERIC: One of the best pieces of advice I got about diet was to “covet your cheat meals. They will keep you sane.” That’s not to say to have several cheat meals throughout the week. Kind of defeats the purpose of clean eating. But with that said, I am an absolute sucker for a Chinese buffet. When I go I will make a day of it and eat more sushi and hibachi stir fry than you thought would be possible for any one person.

BECCA: I was on a reality TV show called “Secret Princes” on TLC. I cannot tell a lie. I went on speed dates with these four men and was basically almost a Princess of Genova. But it’s cool. Eric is an upgrade. I also once ran into Carrie Underwood at Dicks Sporting Goods and put on her outfit because I have no shame. Photo evidence below!
