For our March spotlight athlete, we chose a person who has more integrity and principle than anyone we know. He works incredibly hard during every WOD, usually leaves a big sweat angle on the floor afterwards, and is involved in the CFR community every chance he gets. This guy also loves to row and absolutely hates double unders…and if you haven’t guessed it by now, it’s none other than Kelly Culp! Kelly has been with us pretty much since we opened the doors of CFR and has continually grown as an athlete with his drive and consistency. We are super excited as coaches and as friends to see Kelly advance in CrossFit! We are extremely proud of Kelly and love that he (and his family!) are apart of our CFR family!

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?
Probably my first muscle up. That was something that I wanted to accomplish and it felt great to get the first one. Also, I enjoy working out with my family. It’s another activity that allows us to spend some time together.
How did you find CFR? Why do you train?
My wife has been involved in CrossFit for several years and has encouraged me to go, but I never did in the past. She always said I would like it and when she saw that CFR was opening she signed us up. She knew that once I was signed up I would at least check it out and I am still checking it out…..a year later. Yep, she was right!
I am trying to maintain a level of fitness so that I am around to see my kids grow old and watch their families grow. I also have goals in the box that I want to accomplish and I am not there yet. Lastly, I train because I enjoy it. The whole experience from the coaches, to the WOD’s, to the community.
What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?
Anytime someone accomplishes something they have been working on or watching new members complete their first workout. I like seeing the look of “I can’t believe I just did that.”
What is your daily motivation to workout?
I have goals that I am trying to accomplish. It’s a great stress relief and is probably the one hour of the day (outside of time with my family) that I look forward to the most. Overall, to try and stay in shape.
Favorite and least favorite movements?
I enjoy power cleans and rowing (I know, shocking). No question, my least favorite movement are double unders. I can’t stand them. Conceptually they are so easy, but the whole jumping, spinning, arms in, don’t pike, etc seems to be a challenge to me. Toes to bar is a close second, but I am getting better at those and they are now tolerable. Again, I have goals and improving my DU’s is on the list.
What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?
Just walk through the door. You will be glad you did. All workouts can be scaled to the appropriate level, the coaching is great, and community is very supportive. My only regret is that I did not start this sooner!
One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?
I like a wide range of music, but Linkin Park, Rob Bailey, and 80’s hair bands are good. However, about two minutes into the workout it pretty much becomes noise as breathing becomes the main priority.
Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.
I am very fluent in sarcasm. Ok seriously. I actually can shear sheep and won the Indiana State championship several years ago.
