SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Laura Richardson

For the month of December, we have chosen Laura Richardson as our spotlight athlete! Not only was she the most improved female athlete in the 2020 CrossFit Open but she’s also just an amazingly awesome person! Laura always comes to the gym with a positive attitude and ready to take on any workout thrown her way. She loves a good challenging WOD and is even taking on the 22 Hero WOD Challenge with two other ladies at CFR. Laura listens to her coaches, takes cues, and applies it to her training. She’s incredibly friendly and always extremely fun to have in class. We absolutely love having Laura apart of our CrossFit Rolesville community and couldn’t be prouder of her!

Age:  34

Occupation: 8th Grade Language Arts & Social Studies Teacher

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Competing in the last CrossFit Open and seeing the progress made this past year. It makes me want to continue to work even harder.

How did you find CFR?

My husband, Jason, found CFR and suggested we give it a shot. I was trying to get back in shape post baby that year, and so the timing was perfect. Why do you train? I train because working out is my zen. I feel like no matter what kind of day I’m having, I can come into CFR and be around incredible people who are encouraging & uplifting. The community at CFR is incredible!

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

Completing Murph or Chad Rx. Hero WODs hold a special place in my heart, and doing a workout in honor of someone else who has given the ultimate sacrifice… there are no words.

What is your daily motivation to workout?

My kids. I want them to have healthy and active parents, as long as they possibly can.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite- Wall Balls or Power Cleans; Least Favorite- Thrusters

What’s one thing you would tell a new CrossFitter?

“Use the boys’ bathroom at your own risk.” (Just Kidding)- I would say not to get intimidated. It can be tough walking into a new box and seeing people doing stuff like ring muscle-ups or lifting like 300 lbs, and not think that you won’t ever be able to do even a fraction of that. The best thing about CrossFit is how much you can modify. The only competition to be had is the one with yourself.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

Anything you would hear on “Hip Hop BBQ” on Pandora

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

Something serious- My family (The Van Leers) have a building on GA Tech’s campus named after them; because my great-grandfather was President of GA Tech for over a decade; Something stupid- I genuinely hate the sound that cotton balls make when you pull them apart.
