Spotlight athletes are back and we couldn’t think of a better person to highlight in November than CrossFit Rolesville athlete, Mary Haywood! Mary has been a member of the CFR community for several years now and we’d love to recognize her this month as the spotlight athlete! Mary is one of the most kind-hearted people we have ever met and we absolutely love her friendly vibes she brings to class. We’ve been blown away by her determination and drive to still stay active during this crazy year. Mary constantly impresses us on her progress and always listens to coach’s cues and advice. She is one strong lady and we are extremely proud to have her as a friend and member at CrossFit Rolesville.
Occupation: Director, Implementation at Fidelity Charitable
Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville? I felt really good about how I did in the March Madness partner competition in March of this year.
How did you find CFR? Why do you train? I noticed CFR when you opened because my hubby and son did TKD next door. However, I was working thru an ankle injury (from running) and my PT told me not to try Crossfit, so I didn’t check it out on day 1. About 18 months later, I needed to up my training game, and my ankle was better, so I decided to check it out, and the rest is history. I train because I’m old and determined to stay active & healthy, so I can be here to see my 10-year old son grow up.
What is your favorite moment so far at CFR? Friday Night Lights are pretty awesome. I did my first one in ’19, and love the community cheering you on.
What is your daily motivation to workout? I whine about being sore a lot but I love seeing how much I can get done and then being a bit sore afterwards (except when I can’t get down the stairs or put my arms over my head, haha!).
Favorite and least favorite movements? Everyone knows these! Favorite – deadlift. Least Favorite – burpees!! Fun fact, I also like the burpee box get overs.
What’s one thing you would tell a new CrossFitter? Just show up consistently. We have the best coaches and they will help you scale when you need to, and also push you when you can go further than you might think.
One song that gets you amped up during a WOD? My jam is anything ‘80s or ‘90s (although I am woefully out of the loop on all the cool rap artists from the 90s).
Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know. Many people assume I’m either Hispanic or Indian, but I’m actually half Japanese, half Caucasian. My mom was from Japan and my dad from Ohio. They met on an Air Force base in Nebraska and then I was born in Germany.
PS: Enjoying my new morning routine but would love to add a shoutout to the evening CFR crew – I miss them a ton!!
